SINGLE OF THE WEEK: FLORENCE & THE MACHINE - 'YOU GOT THE LOVE (XX REMIX)'

First made famous by Candi Staton and The Source way back in 1991 (later re-released in 97) 'You Got The Love' was an instant Dance smash peaking at number 3 in the UK charts. Florence and The Machine's version peaked at 27 and we at GFC were not that keen on her cover at first but it slowly grew on us. What we do love is this remix by The XX. It's kind of like a cover of a cover. It is a bit more lethargic sounding and the throbing bass sounds amazing. Far better than Florence's original effort. The track is released this week on download only.

THE XX album out now

The only British album worth getting in a fit about is out today. woot. XX by The XX (confusing) is lo fi sounding, spacious and totally amazing. The album was recorded in a tiny room down at XL records by the band themselves. exploring space and 'less is more' is a key element of the album like some kind of modernist painting. Maybe like a Mondrian. The album is chilled out but still has that killer melody, bass line and guitar hook. Pure genius

Two bands that have played for us and that we love very much have singles out this week so go out and buy 'em already.

THE XX - BASIC SPACE

Basic and spacious this is lo-fi pop genius. A lazy summer sound with lovely vocals and instrumentation.

LOVVERS - OCD GO GO GIRLS

Garage punk at its best. Soundls like the stooges and for some reason we're hearing Supergrass in there too. Caught by the fuzz or some shit like that.

NATION OF SHOPKEEPERS PHOTOS

Hi All, as you know we were asked to DJ at the launch night of Nation Of Shopkeepers along with Lovefoxx from CSS amongst many other cool people. Dinosaur Pile - Up and Old Romantic Killer Band were playing live. It was ace.  We also put on our own night the following Monday (Bank Holiday) with live performances from The XX, Post War Years, Brontide, Mi Mye, Pengillys, Just Handshakes (We're British) and Twisted and  dj sets from Rob Webb (Drowned in Sound, NME), Jumbo Records and Golden Owl.  Here are a bunch of photos from the Good Form Club Bank Holiday Monday do. THE XX

The XX are are an understated, minamalist and hauntingly soulful South London Quartet. They make excellent lo-fi, laid back, new wave pop with dead simple instrumentation, sampled beats and boy-girl vocals. Obvious influences would be The Cure, Massive Attack and Coco Rosie but they also claim Missy Elliot to be an influence so their sound is a real fucked up fusion of things. They are going to be releasing records through our good pals Young Turks.
